Hacettepe Unıversty Department of Nuclear Energy Engıneerıng

The Nuclear Engineering Department aims to educate students to be nuclear engineers who will be able to make scientific contributions to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to work for establishing and developing nuclear technology in Turkey. The technological problems of energy production by fission of heavy isotopes in nuclear reactors receives primary emphasis. Nuclear engineering is a special field of engineering that requires extensive knowledge of mathematics, physics, engineering sciences and nuclear sciences and ability to make mature analysis of physical situations. Therefore, in the world and in Turkey a different education program has emerged for nuclear engineers. In this respect, the Department of Nuclear Engineering, established in 1978 as one of the departments of the graduate school, initiated its undergraduate program in 1982.
EDUCATION
The first two years of undergraduate study serve as a preparational period for the next two years. During the first two years students complete the required courses in mathematics, classical, modern and nuclear physics, electronics, basic engineering sciences and computer programming. In the third year, along with numerical analysis, heat transfer and fluid mechanics, introductory courses in nuclear engineering are offered. The fourth year is reserved for detailed analysis of reactor systems; nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear materials and courses in nuclear reactor analysis and control are offered. Throughout the undergraduate education students are encouraged to take active part in research and special projects are assigned to them each semester.
Experimental studies in radiation detection and measurement are performed in the laboratories of Physics and Nuclear Engineering departments. The required number of credits for an undergraduate degree is 135; 16 in mathematics, 18 in physics, 14 in numerical analysis and computer programming, 66 in engineering subjects, and 12 in projects. Besides, 8 weeks of practical training during summer months is mandated.
The language of the education is English. Students who cannot pass English-Proficency exam must attend the preparatory school for English for one year.
GRADUATE STUDY
The Department of Nuclear Engineering offers M.S. (Master of Science) and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees.
Candidates who meet the requirements stated in the University Guidebooks and hold an undergraduate degree in an Engineering field or in Natural Sciences may apply for the M.S. program. M.S. students who do not hold an undergraduate degree in Nuclear Engineering are supposed to take additional courses determined by the Graduate Committee.
